A good map is a great help to visitors to Orkney. VisitOrkney produces a useful one, which also includes Shetland.

The Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 series covers Orkney in three sheets, and is recommended for all serious explorers.

Over the Barriers

South Ronaldsay and Burray are now joined to the mainland by the Churchill Barriers and thus are easily accessed, except during winter storms, when they may become briefly impassible. The little islands of Lamb Holm, with the Italian Chapel, and Glimps Holm are stepping stones on the way to Burray.

There are many sites of interest "Over the Barriers", including their associated blockships and the lovely sandy beaches which have built up at Barriers #3 and #4. These include the Tomb of the Eagles, the Hoxa Tapestry Gallery, the Marine Life Centre and St Margaret's Hope.
